SHORTS PROGRAM: NORTHWEST
A showcase of short documentary and narrative films from the
Pacific Northwest with numerous filmmakers in attendance.
AIR
US, 2005, 5 minutes

Shot on Super-8 this past summer, AIR responds to the anti-Asian
remarks of two New Jersey DJs last spring and stresses the importance
of alternative media for Asian Pacific Americans, displacing
longstanding stereotypes of silence and passivity with audio from a
Northwest APA radio show.

BLUE SCHOLARS

MC George "Geologic" Quibuyen and DJ Alexei "Sabzi" Saba Mohajerjasbi
are the hip hop duo Blue Scholars. Their body of work is deeply
influenced by their heritages and issues that are local, national and
global in scope. Committed to making music about and contributing to
their communities, the Blue Scholars have emerged as one the
pre-eminent talents in Seattle music today.

Because of their "exotic" appearance and "hard to pinpoint"
beauty, racially ambiguous fashion models have become extraordinarily
popular. Personal narrative and clips from pop culture are woven
together to argue that the popularity of these models is not isolated
or superficial, but rather a key part of understanding race and racism
in America.

there some other way out, where she can keep her independence and her
sanity?

Jikken translates as "experiment" in the Japanese language. In
this documentary, the silent 1926 Japanese film KURUTTA IPPEIJI
(A PAGE OF MADNESS) is interpreted by the Aono Jikken Ensemble, a
Seattle-based musical group, through their rehearsals and performances
of their composed score.

Follow the adventures of the Super Nip as filmmaker Jeff Chiba
Stearns explores his cultural backgrounds growing up a mix of Japanese
and Caucasian in a small white-bred Canadian city. A humorous yet
serious classically animated film about struggle and love and finding
one�s identity through the trials and tribulations of growing up a
half minority.
