NORTHWEST FORUM ON ASIAN-AMERICAN IMAGES IN MEDIA: FILM

Seattle and Lake
Washington Chapters
of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL)

Asian Americans are rarely featured in mainstream film. When they
are, they are often cast in stereotypical, one-dimensional roles. This
forum will discuss contemporary issues related to Asian American
images in film. Speakers will include the following:

TONY CHAN -- Author, journalist and filmmaker, Tony Chan
has written five books including biographies of Chinese American
movie icon Anna May Wong and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing. He
worked as a television street reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation and as an anchor and senior producer for the weekly
documentary series FOCUS for Television Broadcasts Ltd. in Hong
Kong. At TVB, he produced more than thirty documentaries including
the award-winning piece on the downfall of Hu Yaobang that
precipitated the 1989 Tian'anmen events. He is currently completing
a four-part series on Asian Americans and the Vietnam war. AMERICAN
NURSE (1992) aired on KCTS in 1993 and was an award winner at the
tenth Hiroshima International Film & Video Festival. Chan currently
teaches digital journalism, Asian films, and Asian American cinema
at the University of Washington. |

WES KIM (presenting the film VISION TEST) -- Kim is the
writer/director of the award-winning short films PROFILES IN SCIENCE
and VISION TEST. He is also a co-director of the film series Sneak
Films and the director of the Northwest Asian American Film
Festival. Kim lives with his wife and two sons in Seattle,
Washington. |

X. DEAN LIM (presenting the film THE YELLOW TRUTH) -- New York native
X. Dean Lim interrupted the gestation of a perfectly good
Manhattan stereotype when he moved to Los Angeles to become a
writer -- an entirely different stereotype. Since then, he's
kicked around (and been kicked around) on several television
writing staffs while being also being punted about by a handful
of useless film studios with dangling development carrots.
Currently he is working for John Wells Productions. To this
date, he has still not studied writing, directing or filmmaking. |

KAREN LIN (presenting the film
PERFECTION) -- After Karen Lin received degrees from Pomona College and UC Berkeley, she
decided to head to Hollywood and follow her passion for film.
She started as an agent�s assistant, and moved on to feature
film production; three years ago, she made the leap into
production managing music videos and producing short films. In
March 2001, she founded ZuZu Films and completed PERFECTION, her
first 35mm short film. She is currently developing a documentary
and a romantic comedy feature film,
A LUCKY ACCIDENT. |
The forum will feature
short film clips, discussion, and a Q&A. Light refreshments will be
provided.
